The History of CHECK

A Legacy of Collaboration in Computing and Technology

The first official CHECK Conference was held on May 25, 1972, at Kansas State Teachers College (now Emporia State University).

CHECK grew out of a series of informal, ad hoc conferences organized by the Kansas Regents computing center directors during 1970, 1971, and early 1972. The final conference in this series took place on February 10, 1972, at Kansas State University, where the name CHECK was officially adopted for future conferences.

The organization behind CHECK, RITC, was formerly known as the Kansas Regents Computer Advisory Committee (RCAC).

Originally, CHECK was a one-day conference. The shift to a two-day format began in 1995, when Kansas State University hosted a special one-day security conference on May 18, immediately followed by the traditional one-day CHECK conference on May 19. After that year, the two-day format became the standard for the CHECK Conference.

Around the same time, the conference expanded to include Kansas colleges and universities outside the Regents system. While the host institution has typically been a Regents school, there have been exceptions,
